Mosaic Interfaith Out of the Cold ~ Offering a Warm Hand

Yes, there are homeless people in our community. And these homeless people may have slept outside on these bitter cold nights.

There are more than 500 homeless people in York Region at any one time.
Their homelessness may have been caused by:
- mental illness
- losing a job
- illness
- domestic violence
- relationship breakdowns

But our community has not abandoned them.
A number of faith communities have opened their doors. Mosaic Interfaith Out of the Cold is the coordinating body for 10 faith communities operating “Out of the Cold” shelters in York Region. It is a unique program that brings together communities of different faiths on a common principle – helping those in need.

For 4 nights a week the homeless are picked up and taken to one of the shelters and provided with:
- a sit-down meal
- clean clothes
- entertainment such as movies and music
- full breakfast
- bagged lunch
- public transportation tokens
- nursing and social services
- showers
- hair cutting/grooming

.......and a warm place to sleep.

The places of worship that have opened their doors are:
- Jaffari Islamic Centre
- Temple Har Zion
- Thornhill United Church (a collaboration by Thornhill United Church, Holy Trinity Anglican Church and Thornhill Baptist Church)
- St. Luke's Catholic Church
- Rouge Valley Mennonite Church
- Toronto Chinese Community Church

There is the wish to have more congregations on board and have more facilities open every night of the week. This includes a Richmond Hill location. MIOC is planning to open a day-time drop in facility for homeless people by August 2013.

Each facility provides the location, and their volunteers are there to lend a hand including making meals.

MIOTC provides each partner site with:
- mattresses
- transportation of guests
- security
- volunteer training
- some funding
