Coldest Night of the Year - a fundraiser for our homeless

Coldest Night of the Year

We’re doing something to support the homeless in our community.

Mosaic Interfaith Out of the Cold has been organizing faith based groups to open their doors and provide shelter and food for over 20 years.

From November to March, between 50 and 75 men and women each night are:

  • served a sit-down meal
  • provided with clean clothes
  • provided with shower facilities
  • given medical care
  • enjoy entertainment such as movies and music
  • offered overnight accommodation (with security staff)
  • served a full breakfast
  • given a bagged lunch
  • provided public transportation tokens
  • given guidance for support services
  • transported to the shelter

Why are people homeless? Lots of reasons  - illness, loss of jobs, mental health, no affordable housing….. very often a combination of these.

Over a thousand volunteers have stepped up to assist in some way for some period of time.
But there is still the cost of about $2,000 per night. The Region does pay for some but the costs are increasing

Last year the MOSAIC organization decided they must raise some funds.  Organizing a Coldest Night of the Year walk was an option.
In less than 2 months a very successful first fundraising walk happened on Feb. 23, 2019.
People signed up, people came and walked, food was offered, and about $46K was raised.

Homelessness has not gone away.

Again this year there will be a Coldest Night of the Year fundraising walk Feb 22nd, 2020. 2-22-2020. The walk starts about 5 pm.

Please consider supporting this fundraiser.
There’s a 2km and 5 km route leaving from St George’s Antiochian Community Centre at Bayview and 16th (lots of parking)
You can create a team.  A few people, including just your family, would be good!
You can just be a walker signing up under the MOSAIC team or Connecting the Community.
You can just donate.

All participants are given toques.  Hats off to all supporters!!!
