Mayor David West’s 2025 State of the City Address - Meeting today’s challenges for a better tomorrow

On October 27, Mayor David West delivered his 2025 State of the City Address at the Richmond Hill Board of Trade Mayor’s Luncheon to about 250 guests at the Sheraton Parkway.

The address provided highlights of the past year, including:

  • progress on the new pedestrian and cyclist bridge to connect our David Dunlap Observatory Park to Observatory Lane
  • traffic-calming solutions which have helped reduce speeding, investments in parks such as Richmond Green
  • new Dave Barrow Civic Square
  • new Cultural Centre opening in the historic Old Post Office.

The YRP stats to date were reported:

  • Homicides are down 67 per cent
  • Carjackings have decreased by 49 per cent
  • Residential and commercial break and enters have declined by 11 per cent
  • auto theft in York Region is down by 37 per cent. (due largely to YRP’s “Operation Auto Guard”)

Also,

  • housing remains a top priority.
  • Yonge North Subway Extension is on track with Metrolinx awarded the tunneling contract.
  • Richmond Hill’s global engagement was highlighted
  • partnership with the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health
  • trade mission to world’s largest industrial trade fair in Germany
  • Richmond Hill, as North America’s first frontrunner city, hosted the Urban Economy Forum summit discussing ways  forward for cities particularly related to building affordable housing.  

Considering this was a talk to the Board of Trade, it was stressed that economic development remains a cornerstone of Richmond Hill’s success.
