4 Procedures to Train Cognitive Skills at Home or in School

Whether you're a teacher, parent or combination of both, there are procedures you can use to help train students' cognitive skills. Also known as brain skills, cognitive skills are the core skills our brains use to think, read, learn, remember, reason and pay attention. Working together, these skills take incoming information and move it into the bank of knowledge we use every day at school (and at work and life in general).

Although LearningRx programs train the brain using research-backed methods that are intensive, targeted mental exercises, there are also pieces you can use at home to supplement that training.

Here are four procedures to try:

  1. For working memory:

(You can do these two activities with nothing more than what you have in the house.)

  2. For logic & reasoning:

(Nothing is required for this activity beyond the activity sheet.)

  3. For processing speed:

(You'll need a deck of cards and, for some procedures, a metronome.)

  4. For sound manipulation:

(Nothing is required for this activity beyond the activity sheet. The procedures can help train reading speed and accuracy.)
