The Construction of the Memorial Begins

less than 1 minute

The fences are up.  The backhoes have arrived. Construction is set to begin on a memorial dedicated to the 176 victims of Flight PS752, the passenger aircraft that was shot down shortly after departing Tehran, Iran, on January 8, 2020.

The tragedy had a profound impact on Richmond Hill, which lost 44 residents—making it the largest single-day loss of life abroad in the city's history.

Designed in partnership with the families of the victims, the Memorial to Honour the Victims of Flight PS752 will serve as a lasting tribute to those who lost their lives. The memorial will feature the names of all 176 victims, ensuring their memories are preserved for future generations.

Unity Park was chosen as the site for the memorial because of its symbolic connection to togetherness, healing, and community. The park will provide a place for reflection, remembrance, and contemplation, while bringing people together to honour the victims and support their families.

The memorial is expected to become a destination for visitors from across Canada and around the world who wish to pay their respects. Completion date is December 2026.

Funding for both the memorial and the redevelopment of Unity Park has been provided through a partnership between all levels of government. In addition to the memorial, the park improvements will include new play equipment, accessible walkways, seating areas, enhanced lighting, gardens, a new gazebo, and additional shade structures.
